The AIMS 2023 Hunter Valley Regional Seminar was held in Pokolbin on Thursday 16th November at the Mercure Resort Hunter Valley Hardens, with over 60 people in attendance.
Presenters included renowned Hunter Valley historian Ed Tonks who spoke on the South-Maitland coalfield, recent graduate Samuel Plater who spoke on his university research on Underground surveying methods for mining and tunnelling, Cian Gleeson from Sphere Drones spoke about the development of their drone in a box solution, Cathy Moses from Surveying Careers NSW provided an update on what is happening to try to encourage more people into Surveying as a career and as for feedback on what the best approach might be attract more people into a surveying career in mining. Mark Lane from Faro represented Caroni and spoke about SLAM technology and point cloud processing for underground mines.
Russell Box from UPG Solutions and Nick Pryke from Sitec Solutions presented on positioning solutions to surrounding workforces to integrate with survey workflows. AIMS President James Sherritt spoke about surveys in support of the setup of machine guidance systems on mining equipment at United Wambo.
The highlight of the day was a presentation from retiring mining surveyor Ian Payne on his career in mining within the Hunter Valley and Gunnedah regions. Ian was recently elected as a Fellow of AIMS and was presented with his Fellow certificate following his presentation by President James Sherritt.

On the afternoon preceding the seminar, AIMS hosted ten candidate mining surveyors for a workshop on the registration process and outlined the projects and exams that are to be completed as part of the process. It was great to see such a good attendance at the workshop and we will continue to host these events In the future.
