Mine Surveying as part of General Practice

Hello AIMS members. I am a new Student member aiming to get Registered in Queensland in early 2027. I'm currently studying at USQ and working as a Survey Technician (chainy) with a general survey firm in Townsville, Queensland.

My first exposure to the fundamentals of mine surveying came this trimester and some of the work looks fascinating, particularly some of the early development and rehabilitation work. As a new entrant to the surveying industry I believe it is too early to specialise in one area of practice, and at the moment I like the idea of the old-fashioned generalist surveyor that could adapt skills to areas like cadastral engineering and or mining work as the need arose.  By way of example some of the mining shaft plumbing methods taught at USQ were used in an engineering service tunnel under the Brisbane River by one of our lecturers Ken Cross. This adaptation of survey practices across is really interesting.

My question to AIMS is: does the modern mine survey operation have a place for "part time" personnel - particularly entry level positions doing field work or initial drafting of documents?

Look forward to your responses.
