CAREER HISTORY

Career to date?
Started surveying at 18 for my father’s small surveying company. Mainly engineering surveying. Transferred to mining around 23 for a contract survey company in Singleton (Pegasus). After a few years with Pegasus I started working underground for 5 years as an assistant surveyor. While working underground I gained my survey registration and not long after started at Liddell Open Cut as the registered surveyor. I remained there for 6 years and recently moved to Ravensworth Open Cut in the same role.

Father

First in charge role at Liddell.

Career goals?
In the meantime I’m happy doing what I currently am.

SURVEY WORK/PEOPLE

What is the best piece of survey equipment/technology/software that you have used & why?
Our recently purchased laser scanner. It’s able to accurately survey an area in a short amount of time whilst the mining equipment remains operational.

What is the oldest piece of survey equipment that you have used?
Wild T2. Used underground a couple of times and whilst studying.

Who's the strangest/funniest/unorthodox survey character that you've met so far (and why) ?

If you were the boss for a day - list 3 things you would change?
Update some of the equipment. Explore the options of a 9 day fortnight or at least 1 RDO / month. Max out the work credit card on a ‘work function’ get together

APART from $$, what factor attracts you to work in the mining industry as opposed to other survey disciplines?
Working with a large variety of people and interacting with everyone. You are not stuck in a one or two man survey party all day where you don’t interact with many people at times.

Would you recommend a career in surveying to a grade 12 school kid? If not, what career would you recommend?
Definitely. It is a great variety of field work and office work. There is always something different to do. If not surveying then Mine Engineering. Having an engineering degree is a great start to lead into many different fields in the mining industry once you realise what path you prefer.

SPORTS/HOBBIES

How do you relax?
Exercising, landscaping at home, cooking a bbq with a few drinks.

What sports do you play/ watch?
Occasionally play squash. Gym a few times a week. Enjoy watching most sports, especially ufc, tennis

What are your other hobbies outside work?
Fishing, camping, 4wding, cars.

Where would be your ideal retirement location?
Current house location would suit me fine.

Favourite food/drink?
Satay, Steak, Bourbon

Favourite movie?
The Hangover

Finally, if you were down to your last $10 what would you spend it on?
My kids
