Survey Work / People

What is the best piece of survey equipment/technology/software that you have used & why?
Gyromat 3000 Gyroscopic Theodolite. Still fascinates me how it works, and the accuracy achievable.

What is the oldest piece of survey equipment that you have used?
Inverted image T1 Wild Theodolite.

Who's the strangest/funniest/unorthodox survey character that you've met so far (and why) ?
My first senior Surveyor, Ray Smith. Would always stop at the Loaded Dog (pub in Tarago NSW) on the way home. Many evenings spent in the doghouse when I finally got home but always had a good time.

What's the most contentious survey issue in your workplace at the moment?
Acknowledgment from other disciplines when I was working with mining companies.  We are usually the connect between management and the workforce but not often recognised for that.

If you were the boss for a day - list 3 things you would change?
Comparable pay to other mining professional.

Continuing professional development for all Surveyors

Less hours/more pay.

APART from $$, what factor attracts you to work in the mining industry as opposed to other survey disciplines?
I still enjoy the challenges surveying offers, also the camaraderie between Surveyors. Also have lived and worked in some very interesting places.

Would you recommend a career in surveying to a grade 12 school kid?  If not, what career would you recommend?
Yes, a great mix of office and outdoors work. Always new challenges, especially with advances in technology.

How do you relax?  Watching sport.

What sports do you play/ watch? Running, bicycling in the old days, these days I just watch mostly league and soccer.
