CAREER HISTORY

Career to date?
Mine Surveyor (contract and staff) between 9-ish years
Survey sales consultant specialising in Leica Geosystems equipment - 13+ years

Career Influences?
Too many to mention.

Career highlight (biggest achievement)?
Travelling to Tanzania to help train the local surveyors.

Career shocker?
No one wants to admit that to the public...but it would have to be in my early years - Decline / incline intersecting with a significant 50cm bump in wall, fortunately not completely my fault, but survey is a TEAM effort.

Career goals?
To work on some projects where I can tell my son “my company worked on that!”

SURVEY WORK / PEOPLE

What is the best piece of survey equipment/technology/software that you have used & why?
Leica GS18Tilt Rover. Amazing that it can, without any calibration or magnetic influences, take highest accuracy RTK shots without levelling the pole…. You can get right into building corners, and pit toes without the frustration of losing lock. I am a bit biased though.

What is the oldest piece of survey equipment that you have used?
Geodimeter (ORANGE) not sure what model, single face, non coaxial laser.

Who's the strangest/funniest/unorthodox survey character that you've met so far (and why).
Phil “Bucky” Buck (RIP)….. he was grumpy, had the driest sense of humour, rarely ate lunch, and only drank cider but managed to pull out 12 hour days consistently, and he never ever complained about doing the work, maybe only complained about who he had to work with ?.

What's the most contentious survey issue in your workplace at the moment?
What are surveyors prepared to pay for support and training from suppliers. The expectation for free ongoing support, on almost a 24/7 basis, is high, whilst the insistence to supply goods at a rate palatable to companies is unbalanced….. how do we make companies understand the value of professional support on top of equipment price?

If you were the boss for a day - list 3 things you would change?
1) I would go do some field work, many sites had “bosses” that gave up on that once they got the big gig.
2) Be an advocate for further training and professional development of the team.
3) Fairly distribute the Xmas / New Year shift

APART from $$, what factor attracts you to work in the mining industry as opposed to other survey disciplines?
Speaking mostly about underground metalliferous, I like being able to structure a day, week and month’s tasks, without too many changes being made. ALTHOUGH this is only achievable with a good survey crew, and circle of conscientious professionals in the mine tech services team.

Would you recommend a career in surveying to a grade 12 school kid? If not, what career would you recommend?
I certainly would recommend Surveying to graduating year 12’s…. it was a message that came to my high school many years ago. However, I would talk more about the many forms of surveying, which is something that has only become more known to me since working as a survey sales consultant.

SPORTS/HOBBIES

How do you relax?
Wine and chat with the girlfriends.

What sports do you play/ watch?
I like to jog, but don’t think that is a sport..? I also like to watch footy and rugby.

What are your other hobbies outside work?
Reading, renovating my old house, travelling to see friends in faraway places.

Where would be your ideal retirement location?
Anywhere you buy a wine at the local deli, and can drink it in a public open space, like down the beach.

Favourite food/drink?
Chicken Parmi / Wine

Favourite movie?
Original Star Wars

Finally, if you were down to your last $10 what would you spend it on?
A pint...or two (if it is happy hour).
