Review - Mudgee 2021 Seminar

Mudgee 2021 180x160 It was a great experience at the AIMS Mudgee Seminar in 2021.

mudgee 2021 6 Covid-19 meant the 2020 seminar had to be cancelled and with some minor restrictions still in place we went to a new, bigger venue. Keeping the same format it was great to see close to 60 delegates attend.

Friday night (7th May) kicked off with a night of socialising and catching up at Roth’s Wine Bar. This was a fantastic start with people mingling, catching up with old friends and meeting new ones, setting the scene for the presentations to follow on Saturday.

Attendees enjoyed the chance to sample the wonderful Mudgee beer and wine from local companies with some amazing wood fired pizza!

Saturday morning brought a change of venue. The Parklands Resort was the new venue, with its beautiful outdoor areas, amazing function centre and restaurant and we had close to 60 attendees.

Our first presentation was from Matt Brown on Bathymetric Surveying and Water management. The topic covered the end-to-end process of carrying out Bathymetric Surveys and the how, why where and when they are conducted. Matt also went on to introduce a new remote monitoring device for dam and water management. Yabby Sensors are a new water management system that allows for real-time monitoring and automated management of the water structures. Using surveying technology, the Yabby Sensor system means removing the surveyor from the hazard, whilst still managing the water storage.

Our second presentation was from Alan Mellor. Alan’s fascinating presentation covered the survey work of Mine Sealing Investigation Surveys, for Vale of Clwydd No.2 Colliery. Alan’s presentation covered the research carried out the old mine and its workings, digitising of old workings from available plans into CAD and validating the data. The validation of the data in the field and then the drilling and use of Down Hole Laser Scanner and SONAR to view and survey the underground workings. Alan also included work conducted by RPS to model still standing infrastructure. Finally, being about to determine volumes for the Bulkhead and filling works with some certainty. Alan included a very informative and relevant 15min session on CPD. The new details of claiming CPD points and what is coming up.

Our 3rd presentation for the Mudgee Seminar was by Peter Sergeant. Peter spoke about the Preservation of Survey Infrastructure (POSI). Peter’s paper was a Mine Surveyors guide and very informative as he went through the different type of survey infrastructure and the different types of mining to demonstrate all the different scenarios. Peter went through the relevant legislation and directions to complete the process.

The three presentations concluded the “formal” part of the seminar and bought us up to lunch time.

After lunch the attendees broke into groups and moved around our event sponsors getting a short interactive demonstration of the latest technology they have to offer. This was a great opportunity for the attendees to ask questions of the sponsors or see how something works and was well received by both the sponsors and attendees alike.

With lots of things on offer in Mudgee there is no doubt that many people will be looking forward to returning next year for another great seminar.
