Statutory
Review on Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 (WA)
A statutory review of the operation and
effectiveness of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 (WA) has been
conducted by Commissioner Stephen Kenner of the WA Industrial Relations
Commission.
Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Norman
Moore, said although a statutory review of the Act was not required until
after December 1, 2009 it was determined that it was appropriate to bring
the review forward so that a number of important studies could be considered
as part of the review.
“Commissioner Kenner made a total of 119
recommendations in the report that can be broadly divided into
recommendations about the role and operation of the regulator, and
recommendations about the Mines Safety Inspection Act and its
administration,” Minister Moore said.
There are 4 recommendations (recommendations
76-79) put forward by Commissioner Kenner that apply directly Mine
Surveying, one of which is that the Mine Survey Board include an oral
assessment or interview of all applicants for the Authorised Mine Surveyor’s
Certificate. Detailed information can be found on pages 272-283.
Commissioner Kenner's report was tabled in
Parliament on April 8, 2009 and will be carefully considered by the
Government.
