Progress to Date

  • In late 2010, Draft National Mine Surveying Codes of Practice for Coal & Metals mines were released to the various State Survey boards & AIMS for review and comment.
  • During February & March 2011, members within the national mine surveying community were invited to provided feedback to AIMS in preparation for an Industry response to Safework Australia.
  • 17th March 2011, AIMS Industry response meeting - as a result of the response meeting, the decision was taken to develop one draft National Mine Surveying Code of Practice to cover both Coal & Metals Mines.
  • The current Draft National Mine Surveying Code of Practice currently sits with SafeWork Australia

Brief Overview of the Draft National Mine Surveying Code of Practice

  • Nationwide consistency in approach to mine surveying offers many benefits, not least enhanced confidence within the industry in addressing statutory requirements and cost-effectiveness in implementing them.
  • The COP will act as the first keystone in the ongoing process to allow Australian Mine Surveyors to move more freely between state mining jurisdictions.
  • The Code will apply to the conduct of surveys, preparation of plans and storage of data for mines in Australia.
  • The principal users of the code are the Mine Surveyors and in particular the Nominated Mine Surveyor. The person conducting the business or undertaking has functions in relation to this code.
  • If prescribed State legislation is available then the State legislation must be applied as a minimum standard. The code should be used in conjunction with State legislation and if State legislation does not exist, this code must be used as a minimum standard.
  • Essentially a generic code to encompass all Mine Surveying in, on or about mining operations within Australia.

Timeline going forward:

  • Proposed Public Comment Period – June/July 2011
  • Proposed Commencement of the Model Work Health and Safety Act, model WHS Regulations and Codes of Practice – January 2012
