Survey Work / People

What is the best piece of survey equipment/technology/software that you have used & why?
GPS, I have never caught up on so much sleep or cured so many hangovers with another piece of equipment or technology. Sunny surveying, got to love it.

What is the oldest piece of survey equipment that you have used?
Wild T1 and Steel Band. Thank God those days are over…..

Who's the strangest/funniest/unorthodox survey character that you've met so far (and why) ?
Hayes, now there’s a man that can drink and almost throw darts that hit the board.

Who do you admire most in the surveying profession - past or present (and why?)
Mr Wilson (Bryan), he was smart enough (I think) to give me a chance surveying u/g.

What's the most contensious survey issue in your workplace at the moment? (eg. Hours of work, $$, career path, poor planning/scheduling, technology/equipment improvements, field experience, housing, training …???)
The idea of a one man survey team u/g, it just doesn’t work or assist the business.

If you were the boss for a day - list 3 things you would change?
Pay rise for the surveyors (a big one), 4 on/ 3 off roster and compulsory golf afternoon each week (may be incorporated into the 3 days off, Nah!)

APART from $$, what factor attracts you to work in the mining industry as opposed to other survey disciplines?
The different types of people, work places and environments that I have become accustomed to during the few years I have been working, it’s never a dull moment.

Would you recommend a career in surveying to a grade 12 school kid? If not, what career would you recommend?
Yes, it’s the best of both worlds, outdoor work when the weather is good and you need to get away from it all ie engineers and in the office to keep the CAD skills up to speed.

Sports/Hobbies

How do you relax?
Apart from drinking the odd beer, throwing a few darts and having a few people around for couple of laughs.

What sports do you play?
Touch, darts, the odd game of tennis.

What are your other hobbies outside work?
Kid's soccer keeps me pretty busy during winter and the beach on weekends during summer, got to love the 'GONG.

Where would be your ideal retirement location?
Sunshine Coast, close to the water and not too cold.

Favourite food/drink?
Beer and anything to wash it down.

Favourite Karaoke song?
Not a chance in this lifetime, I can make a big enough fool out of myself without adding music.

Favourite movie?
Braveheart

Finally, if you were down to your last $10 what would you spend it on?
A beer and a Kahlua and milk for my wife and something for the kids (chocolate). I might have to scrounge around for some more cash for the kahlua.
